School Car Club "Runs on Cooking Oil"




Filling up with used cooking oil

Students at Maine's Unity College have taken on the high cost of diesel and are reusing waste cooking oil.  They fill up their diesel cars with used cooking oil from the school cafeteria.  The care are set up with one tank for diesel and one for used cooking oil.

Typically "... starts ... on diesel a... until ... waste vegetable oil (WVO) tank has reached 160 degrees. ...then ... switches over to the “grease” tank."


" ... students formed the Grease Car Club and work together to pick up, filter and store the grease."

" ... students say they get up to 45 miles per gallon from the waste vegetable oil and the engine runs smoother on it. They say the reduction in carbon and particulate emissions more than offsets the higher nitrogen oxide emissions."
