New "Eco Index" To Help Consumers Rate Green-ness of Purchases

Some retailers are promoting their Green-ness and Sustainability with measures of their products on the environment.  One the quickly comes to mind is Timberland.  Timberland has a label on all their shoe boxes that tells the environmental impact and how it breaks down by shipping, raw materials, manufacture, etc.

While very informative and helpful there is still no meaningful way to compare across manufacturers ... much like the federal EPA stickers for cars.

That is about to change ...

" ... some 100 retailers ... working together to minimize their impact on the environment, ... measure environmental factors, from creating a product right through its disposal."

" ... the "Eco Index," ... hope ... will become as recognizable on clothing as Energy Star is on appliances. ..."

The "index" is expected to be unveiled in early August at the Outdoor Retailer trade shin Utah.
