Fracking (hydraulic fracturing for oil in shale formations) is a contentious subject. But the demand for energy - including natural gas in shale formations is rising.
Researchers from Penn State has found a way to use waste from industry in place of sand. Currently sand for fracking comes from mines in the mid-west.
The "new material" called PennProd would replace sand
(lowering the carbon footprint of bringing in a non local raw material) and help eliminate industrial waste.
This process would treat industrial waste and use it in the fracking solution ... eliminating waste that would otherwise have to be landfilled. Since a typical Marcellus Shale well would take 25 rail-cars or 5 million lbs of sand this eliminates a good amount of industrial waste.
PennProd is "...engineered to use waste from metabasalt mines. Heated to 3,000 degrees, the metabasalt forms into molten obsidian spheres. The glassy pellets are then heat-tempered into a hardened ceramic."

General Electric's new FlexEfficiency power plants are designed to work well with renewable power sources.
Renewable renewable energy generation can be intermittent as it is dependent on wind or sun and can require augmentation quickly. The FlexEfficiency makes use of technology that let's it run at rates as low as 87% and still be 61 % efficient. 
The technology includes simplified design, construction and waste heat recovery.
The plant is fast starting, highly automated, highly efficient and a range of loads and low in emissions

Research Frontiers, Inc's SPD technology uses suspended particles in glass to react to a small voltage to change from clear to nearly blocked. With voltage is applied the glass is clear.

The Dow Chemical Company and Cobblestone Homes have collaborated on a second highly energy efficient home. This one is at 5018 Butterfield Dr. in Midland, Michigan - home to Dow.
The home was build for approx. the price of the average new home in the U.S. - $250,000 - bring
ing energy efficiency closer to the mass market.
The home is called “InVision Zero” and is expected to " ... to save $2,441 in energy costs and avert 30,233 pounds of CO2 annually ...". These figures are achieved using a number of Dow technologies and products resulting in a very "tight" home that is free of drafts (and the resulting heat / cooling losses).

ome has a DOE HERS (House energy rating) value of -4. Energy Star Homes have a rating of about 85 and Net Zero homes rate a 0. This home is very energy efficient.

San Francisco's new Terminal 2 was retrofitted to be green by design. It is the first Airport Terminal in the US to achieve GOLD LEED.

American University new School of International Service is expected to receive LEED-GOLD certification.

The other day while walking in the city I noticed an interesting large green sticker on a intercity bus. It was from the Green Coach Initiative and promoted the bus line's "support being and acting green."
What a great way to raise Green Awareness !
The University of Vermont with the American Bus Association and the United Motorcoach Association launched the Green Coach Certification Research initiative. Companies that meet the standards are able to "Wear" the appropriate certification; such as the "Green Coach Energy Reduction CERTIFIED" label below.

After building a very efficient building in Boulder, Colorado, the NERL is building an extension that is 17 % more efficient. How ? By looking at changes in available technology in the last year that can bring energy improvements.
One area for change was the windows. Those in Phase 1 are very efficient but still those on the southern exposure were cold ... changes made for Phase 2 included making them slightly smaller and increasing the thermal break to slow air infiltration that can cause temperature changes. When these savings are multiplied over 600 windows the energy efficiency is significant.
Improvements were made in the Phase 2 thermal storage system ... they found they could simplify the design ... instead of " ... interlaced structural concrete grade beams for thermal transfer .... " ... there just now just a " ....a large open concrete crawl space."Lastly each occupant is put on an energy diet of 55 watts / workstation. This goes a long way to keeping electricxity bills under control.

The Army and its operations are energy intensive. Getting energy to remote or war ravaged areas is both expensive and dangerous.
The Army is looking into tents that incorporate PV solar panels that can be used to charge batteries and small electronics like computers. In addition to not having to bring in fuel they can travel lighter by not needing a generator (or a smaller one).

PepsiCo and Waste Management are trying to increase the rate of plastic bottle recycling from the current 34 % to " 50 % by the year 2018.

General Electric announced that they would purchase 25,000 EV by 2015. This is the largest EV purchase announced so far and will get GE closer towards their goal of having half their global fleet being EV by 2015.
"“By electrifying our own fleet, we will accelerate the adoption curve, drive scale, and move electric vehicles from anticipation to action.”"The plan is to buy 12,000 Chevy Volts (General Motors) starting in 2011 and then buy from other manufacturers as they are brfought to the market.
GE will initially purchase 12,000 GM vehicles, beginning with the Chevrolet Volt in 2011, and will add other vehicles as manufacturers bring them to market. By 2015 GE will convert at least half of its global fleet of 30,000 vehicles and will partner with its fleet customers to deploy a total of 25,000 EVs.

Supply and demand are always achieved on the grid. One issue for renewable energy is how to store the power which may be generated during low demand for use during high demand rather than have it go to waste.

SEPTA and Viridity Energy are working to reclaim and then reuse or resell the electricity generated by SEPTA subway and trolley cars.
Much the same as a hybrid auto using regenerative braking to charge a battery - this system sends the energy generated from braking subway cars back to the Subway power system for short term storage. This turns the normally wasted energy into a resource.
Viridity Energy 's solution will " ... allow SEPTA to recycle the energy created from the regenerative braking ability of trains and trolleys ... ". The braking energy will be stored in a large battery.

Some retailers are promoting their Green-ness and Sustainability with measures of their products on the environment. One the quickly comes to mind is Timberland. Timberland has a label on all their shoe boxes that tells the environmental impact and how it breaks down by shipping, raw materials, manufacture, etc.

This all started when I was looking for a "green" way to dispose of an microwave ... that was broken. My local trash hauler /recycler suggested earth911 ... so I looked there for an idea ... none was found ... BUT ... I found some neat suggestions on recycling plastics.
I am currently recycling #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6 and some #7 plastics that are marked as recyclable but you never know when you might find something new.

They are also upgrading standard traffic signals with ones that contain LED light "bulbs". LEDs are even more energy efficient and longer lasting than CFBs - and do not contain any mercury.

The Philadelphia Bourse 
has gone Solar. The old Bourse Building on Independence Mall East has solar panels from SolarDock of Wilmington, Delaware. These roof panels are designed to not impact the integrity of the roof of the historic building.

UPS ' sustainability efforts are well known. Perhaps you have seen their hybrid delivery trucks - sporting their neat hybrid logo. I have seen them on the streets of Philadelphia.
UPS is also a leader in recycling. In addition to paper they recycle batteries and e-waste; which is fast becoming a problem due to the rapid rate of obsolescence of computers and cell phones. e-waste contains significant toxins including lead.

Research at Washington State University (Pullman, Washington) has developed a new compact battery with significantly greater power storage capacity.

IBM has developed a water cooled supercomputer that uses the extracted heat to heat a building. Normally A/C is needed to remove the excess heat to prevent damage to computer systems.
The A/C to remove heat can use almost as much or more energy than that used to power the computers ... resulting in lots of wasted energy and extra carbon footprint What a waste !!

My daily papers are rolled and covered with a plastic bags I noticed my newspapers were rolled in a new plastic bag before being tossed on my driveway. I noticed a neat new bag called green15™.

Dell is using new bamboo packaging materials that are compostable making them easier to dispose of in places other than a dumpster (read landfill). The result is a more sustainable packaging solution.

Kudzu is a very aggressive fast growing vine that is invasive ... if it could be turned into a source of ethanol ... it might kill 2 birds with 1 stone. And it does not compete with food crops as a route to ethanol.

Data Centers are moving to rural areas where land and labor are less expensive. There are often farms and lots of cows ... and therefore lots of cow manure.

My brother and his girlfriend sent photo's of her new Ford Fusion Hybrid. They and the car live in the Research Triangle Park area in NC ...
Buying a hybrid can help you as an individual take action and be greener ... here is a real word experience.
They report ..."We went to the beach week before last and got about 39mpg averaging 70mph. The Fusion has an LCD dashboard display for everything except the speedometer, and uses a “growing vine” to show how well you are managing the hybrids capabilities."

About a week ago I wrote about the cool roof project in Philadelphia [LINK]. The winning block was just announced ... the 1200 Block of Wolf Street.
The residents on this block showed tremendous enthusiasm and community spirit in their quest to become the 'Coolest'. Plus, every roof on the block is suitable for a 'cool roof' coating!
