Over the years dry cleaning has gained a non-environmentally friendly reputation ... mostly due to the petroleum based solvent "perc" which has possible heath effects and and the potential for ground water contamination.

Recently there have been several alternatives to using the industry standard "perc" including CO2 and less toxic solvents.

 We've seen washing machines that tell you whose turn it is, offer remote monitoring, sterilize garb, require no water, and tackle more stains than we knew were possible to pick up, but Sanyo's forthcoming machine lives life on the greener side, and cuts down your trips to the dry cleaners to boot. The aptly-named AQUA was spotted as CES, and aside from the thoughtfully designed entry door that's high enough for folks to reach while standing up, this gizmo rocks a unique "Aqualoop" feature that allows it to recycle water for use in future washes. Moreover, the Air Wash function enables owners to clean clothes at home that are typically reserved for the dry cleaners, as it "infuses" your swag with odor / bacteria-killing chemicals without the use of water, leaving your wearables fresh and your body at home. Although there's no word on price or future availability just yet, we've still got more than a few reservations when it comes to reusing soiled liquid to, um, clean dirty clothing.

Everyone (most everyone reading this blog?) washes clothes.  Modern washers are a great time saver but consume a lot of water ... especially if you do several loads per week.

Imagine washing clothes with a cup of water.  Impossible?  Read on for more ...

" ... Xeros, a Leeds University spin-off, is currently commercializing a washing machine which can clean clothes using just a cup of water."

" ... use of half-centimeter plastic chips to do the actual cleaning. The machine heats what little water (mixed with detergent) is used to dissolve the dirt which is then absorbed by the plastic chips. These chips, ... 44 pounds per cycle, can be reused within a six month timeframe. ... able to remove a variety of everyday dirt such as coffee and lipstick stains."

" ... since the machine only uses a cup of water per kilogram of laundry, the clothes come up almost dry, eliminating the necessity to tumble dry. The company has already received a $1 million funding and expect to put washing machines out in the market by 2009 at the earliest."

Aramark, a large concession operator based in Philadelphia, Pa, has been using green cleaning products at some of the ball parks it serves.

Aramark ... " is working closely with many of its Major League Baseball partners to enhance existing in-stadium environmental efforts as well as implement new programs to reduce environmental impact. ..."

Porshce has an electric car in it's family history ... before Hybrids were even a common word.  The Lohner-Porsche was made in 1901 - 1905 and could run on either gas / electric.

Fast forward to today!  Porsche is a real performance car ,,,, and now a modern hybrid is coming ... "Due by the end of the decade, the Cayenne uses a parallel hybrid system that will help the SUV achieve fuel economy of at least 26 US MPG. ... "

Consumers are expecting more from their cleaning products.  They want earth friendly packaging (recyclable bottles and lots of post consumer plastic) and products that do not harm the earth ... or those using them ... and work effectivly!  Being GREEN is one thiong - spending hours with a product t hat does not work is another.
