Pelamis Wave Power - Energy from the Seas

Pelamis Wave Power

The oceans and the power of the waves and tides waves might be the source of your electricity someday.  Systems that can convert the constant undulation of the waves into energy can harness  what seems like an unlimited renewable energy source.

"...  potential to be one of the most environmentally benign forms of electricity generation ... wave energy around the British Isles ... estimated to be equivalent to three times current UK electricity demand, ..."Pelamis Wave Power system

Pelamis  are minimally impactful ... their visual impact is small as they are half submerged so are not nearly as visibly on the horizon as wind trubines.  They appear to have minimal impact on marine life as well and can be removed much easier than a wind turbine.

They currently have installations undergoing tests in Portugal and Scotland.

Pelamis has their HQ in Edinburgh, Scotland.

SF Mayor Talks about Wave and Tidal Power Options for Green Energy

Gavin Newson, Mayor or SF, California is intersted in exploring the renewable energy options available from the wind. Both wave and tidal are renewable and avaialable in the SF area and given waters density compared to air ... the machinery can be smaller and generate more energy. Via: ZDnet LINK

Shift to Low Carbon Technology in UK

The Carbon Trust's recent analysis recommends that the UK change its neutral technology policies and emphasize investments in wind and wave technologies to position the country as a global leader in generation and clean tech. ...
... "He called for Britain to make smart investments through greater technology prioritisation and to move away from technology neutrality. This new approach, outlined in a new report, means public support will be focused on emerging low carbon technologies and industries that will have the maximum impact on cutting carbon and generating UK economic benefit. " ...

San Francisco Green Initiatives

Gavin Newson, mayor of SF, shares his thoughts on how the city can reduce emissions and become more green and environmentally friendly ... maybe even be the electric car capital of ... the US? Video below ... At the Green: Net '09 Conference in San Francisco, Mayor Gavin Newsom lays out the city's future plans for reducing emissions even further. He explains the city's current electric-car project, and the coming green initiatives of wave technology and tidal-flow generators--a steady stream of energy, he says, that will come right from San Francisco Bay. Ocean Power

Ocean Power Technologies - bouy

Ocean Power Technologies is testing a buoy that harnesses wave energy to make power  ... unlike off shore turbines  theses are close to the ground and are hardly visible ... eliminating the "not in my backyard problem" from shore communities.

" ... a leading renewable energy company specializing in cost-effective, advanced, and environmentally sound offshore wave power technology. ... PowerBuoy® system extracts the natural energy in ocean waves,... is a “smart” system capable of responding to differing wave conditions."

" ... ocean trials have been conducted off the coast of New Jersey to demonstrate the concept of using a floating buoy to capture wave energy and convert it into electricity. ..."

Wave Power

The ocean seems to have an endless amount if energy so it makes sense to want to harness it. Watch the video to see what SF California's mayor has in mind ... for wave and tidal energy

"San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom believes tapping into tidal and wave power is a swell idea. But how feasible and realistic is this new renewable-energy technology? CNET News.com's Kara Tsuboi sits down with the mayor to find out." Via: ZDNet Link

Scotland Prototypes Electric from Waves

wave energy device

There seems to be a lot of energy in waves.  Anyone who has body surfed them in from the sea to the beach knows that.  So how do you get electric from this potential?location of EMEC

EMEC, in Orkney, Scotland is hoping to answer this question.

"... established to help the evolution of marine energy devices from the prototype stage into the commercial market place.... by harnessing the power of waves and tidal streams."

" ...  first centre of its kind ... anywhere in the world, ... opportunity to test full scale prototype devices in unrivalled wave and tidal conditions. ... connected to the National Grid via seabed cables running from open-water test berths. ..."
